Best wishes to Kevin Rudd

The Honourable Kevin Rudd MP has made an extraordinary contribution to Australian public life.

When he ratified the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change, it made me proud to be a member of the Labor party.

His apology to Australia’s indigenous peoples was a moment of great significance in our nation’s history.

And of course, Mr Rudd should be honoured for his stewardship of our nation’s economy during the Global Financial Crisis.

His departure leaves giant shoes to fill, for his successor, not just because of his achievements as Prime Minister, but also because of his passionate advocacy for the people of the South Side.

His work in standing up for the South Side, on issues like airport noise, the cross river rail project, caravan parks, roads, schools and services, made him a great local member. And who could forget the Rudd Bikes program – Mr Rudd donated almost 900 bicycles to schools and community groups.

As a constituent, and a local branch member myself, I wish Mr Rudd and his family all the best for the next stage of their lives, and I look forward to seeing the further contributions that Mr Rudd will surely make.

Since last night’s announcement, many local Labor party members have contacted me to encourage me to seek preselection as Labor’s candidate for Griffith.

It has been humbling to receive such support. I look forward to consulting further with my family and local Labor branch members over coming days.
